In the early '80's David John Oates began researching a technology that was later named Reverse Speech. In 1987 the first book on this phenomenon was written and released by David John Oates and Greg Albrecht, entitled 'Beyond Backward Masking', in it is outlined the origins of interest regarding 'backward masking' and its leading to the discovery and understanding of the subconscious level of the spoken word now called Reverse Speech.
After receiving much interest in the findings by Australian television, more interest was generated in both the therapeutic and investigative fields. David Oates then moved to the United States and received more favorable media coverage, including an appearance on CNN's Larry King Live show. Officials in Washington DC also expressed interest in his work.
Having extensively studied the fields of Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis, he eventually designed a revolutionary new procedure for shifting unconscious patterns that he entitled Metaphor Restructuring, and more recently termed MetaWalk Therapy. This technique receives outstanding reviews for its effectiveness in shifting behavioral patterns.
In the mid '90's, a second book on Reverse Speech outlining the procedures and fully documented with case studies was released, entitled 'Hidden Messages in Human Communication'. Having set up a large and successful therapeutic practice, Reverse Speech was continually receiving attention in the media, and he was a common guest on nationally syndicated radio shows as well as receiving further media coverage such as Extra TV and Strange Universe.
In 1996 David Oates wrote his autobiography, titled 'It's Only a Metaphor', regarding his years researching Reverse Speech.
After spending many years in the United States lecturing and training Analysts, he returned home to Australia in November of 1999 to further his work there. He continues to have a successful Reverse Speech therapeutic and consulting practice, conducts training, and has continued to receive Australian media coverage.
Here in the States, the Reverse Speech field is carried on by Practitioners and Certified Trainers Terese Johnson (California), Jack Johnston (Oregon), and analysts/researchers in both therapeutic and investigative arenas and continues to get high praise from clients and media alike.
